This is the Finnish icebreaker Tarmo steaming up a frozen river somewhere in Finland in the 1920s, with hundreds of people out on the ice to watch it, very close up. I suppose if anybody knows ice, it would be the Finns. Still....

Funny.
Of course it looks stupid, but this is pretty much the barnstorming generation that brought us flight . They crashed a lot in the process. There is something to be said for well placed reckless endangerment.
I love the motorcycle cruising on the melting ice across the bow of the icebreaker.

I guess that kind of silliness was ok in the 20's. We don’t do it anymore as we are very safety oriented country.
Btw t
hat icebreaker still
exists. It has been restored
as a museum ship. I think it’s even operational but despite this it
hasn’t been operated in a while. If you
want to see how it loo
ks like the museum folks have made
a
virtual tour page
.

I’m confused by the sauna, there is no stove or heat source that I can see. Is the sauna a joke, or did they just tap into the steam lines for heat? I see a couple small lines that come into the room that could be steam lines that just open to air.

That’s indeed an interesting topic. One possibility is that the large pipes are
hot enough steam pipes and acting as the
stove. The ship has two saunas but apparently only one is shown
.
